How an old hot tub leaves the yard
Removal is the move without the second address. The tub is switched off and drained, then it either leaves whole on a dolly or is cut into sections on site and carried out in pieces. What happens next is the part people underestimate: Denver's Large Item Pickup does not list hot tubs among what it collects, so the shell has to go by another route. What decides whether it goes whole or in pieces
Getting rid of a hot tub is decided by three questions: how it gets out, where the water goes, and where the shell can be taken. These are the details behind each.
Whole or in pieces
A tub that fits through the route on its side can leave whole. One boxed in by fences, walls or a deck built around it is usually cut up in place, which avoids a crane at the cost of more time on site.
Where the water goes in Denver
Denver allows pool water to be used for irrigation, and allows it into the storm sewer only with a state permit or a chlorine residual below 0.5 mg/l, pumped along the curb to a catch basin within four blocks, and only at 40F or warmer.
Your own town's drain rules
Suburbs set their own. Westminster requires spa water to be completely dechlorinated, with a pH between 6 and 9, before it reaches a storm drain, and no other disposal method can be available.
Where the shell can be taken
The Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site lists bulk liquids among what it cannot accept, so a tub has to arrive empty, at a site that takes it. The destination sets the haul distance, and the haul distance is part of the price.
What is built around it
A deck, gazebo or enclosure built around the tub may have to be opened before it can come out. Arctic Spas' own manual disclaims the cost of removing a sun deck, gazebo or custom fixture to get a spa out.
The circuit left behind
Once the tub is gone, the circuit that fed it is still there. Capping or removing it is work for a registered electrical contractor in Colorado, and it is worth settling before a buyer's inspection sees it.

Size, whether it still runs, where it sits and the narrowest point to the street. A photo of the tub and of the gate usually tells whether it leaves whole or in pieces.
Power off and drain
The tub is switched off at its disconnect and the water goes where the town allows. In Denver that means the lawn or garden, or a curb catch basin under the city's conditions.
Take it out

Haul it to a site that accepts it

Settle what is left behind
The pad or deck is cleared. If the circuit is being abandoned, a registered electrical contractor makes it safe. When the house is for sale, Colorado's homeowner exemption does not cover doing that wiring yourself.

When you may not need this at all
- If the tub still works and someone will collect it, selling it or giving it away may mean nobody needs to cut it up. A buyer who takes it arranges their own move.
- If a buyer is happy for the tub to stay with the house, removal is not needed at all. It is worth asking before you book anything.
- If you are replacing it with a new tub, ask the dealer whether taking the old one away is part of the delivery before you book a separate removal.
- If the tub has no route out, you still may not need a crane: cutting it up in place is the usual answer for a tub nobody is keeping.
What is out of scope
- Wiring work on the circuit left behind. In Colorado that falls to a registered electrical contractor.
- Demolishing or rebuilding a deck, gazebo or enclosure around the tub.

Can I put an old hot tub out for Denver's Large Item Pickup?
Hot tubs are not on its accepted list. The program collects up to 5 large items and 10 bags per address every nine weeks, such as furniture, rugs and mattresses, and excludes construction materials and appliances. A tub goes by haul-away instead.
